‘Dead Flowers’ Out Now!
‘Dead Flowers’ an acoustic live performance of one of my new songs is officially out now on all streaming platforms.
I am beyond proud of this song and the journey the creation of it took me through.
Some of you may know, some may not yet know, but I was signed under a label for 3 years, starting when I was 19 and just ended at the beginning of this year.
Throughout this time under the label every song I brought to the table had been “perfected” to some degree lyrically. As I grew up and grew as a songwriter the tweaks became less and less but still were always there.
So when it came time that I stopped working as a signed artist and turned to being an independent artist, I realized that nobody has heard a song of mine that was 100% mine in quite a while.
The original concept of ‘Dead Flowers’ was birthed in March of 2024, and despite really connecting at first to the song, I quickly grew a lot of doubts about it and decided not to share it with people.
It hit me that if I pursued this song that it would be the first song I put out as an independent artist, which in turn means the first song that hasn’t been “perfected”.
I became very self conscious of my writing, feeling that I wasn’t competent enough to complete something on my own.
But I soon found myself working on ‘Dead Flowers’ in the privacy of my space and I developed a deep, personal connection to it.
Originally written on guitar and performed at a much faster tempo, I felt it was a country song. So when I had the opportunity to perform the same night as the Boston based band Cassidy Deadwater at Midway Café, I felt inspired by their country influence to share ‘Dead Flowers’ for the first time.
The first time sharing it didn’t quite have the moment I had hoped for though. Due to my own insecurities I had hoped for an intense reassurance that my writing was good enough. I didn’t quite get that at the time. But despite that thankfully I felt so connected to the performance of it on a personal level, I decided moving forward to continue to add it to my setlist.
The more it was performed live the more it developed. It became a piano song, it was slowed down and I started receiving that high praise I was looking for.
The lyrics feel the closest to poetry that I’ve ever written and honestly now it feels like some of the strongest writing I’ve put together, once I took the time to fully develop it.
And it’s 100% my own!
Then I connected with Graham Stone owner of Stone Studios based in the Catskills. I had heard of Graham over the years, having been connected to other artists who have worked with him and praised his skills. So I booked a day.
I went in, sat right at the piano, warmed up and performed this song I’ve put so much time, love and effort into. It took two takes before I knew we had the final product.
I was looking for the beauty of imperfection. I wanted those little moments that showed the rawness of the song and vocals. So it’s not a perfect performance technically speaking, but the emotion and purpose of the song is carried through by the way it was completed.
When it came down to creating visuals I decided to reference my lyrics.
Verse one having this line…
“you send me dead rose to show me your hearts
been fading away everyday
so I dried those flowers up on my wall
and I made them last until fall…”
In the summer I had gone down to my sad little garden and cut up the only flowers that had bloomed, brought them to my room and started the drying process.
So by the time autumn came around I booked my friend and photographer Eli Jenkins and took my little bouquet of dried flowers with me!
If you have yet to stream ‘Dead Flowers’ I would so appreciate you to take the 4 minutes out of your day to experience it and if you have listened to it I would love to hear your thoughts and I hope you enjoyed it!
Stay tuned for more <3
